Jenny Wong, Auditor of the City of Berkeley, California (CA), shared her experiences in U.S. federal and local government auditing practice on December 29, 2023. City Auditor Wong, born in Taiwan, immigrated to the U.S. at the age of 6 with her family and served as an auditor for the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) and as a consultant for professional development programs. City Auditor Wong received the support of the citizens of Berkeley, California, and was elected as the City Auditor in 2018, and has been re-elected ever since. During the meeting, City Auditor Wong shared the core values of the office - Integrity, Independence, Impact, and Inclusion, and also explained the importance of equity in auditing and communicating the draft audit findings with auditees. City Auditor Wong was impressed by the establishment of Commission on Key Audit Issues to focus on long-term audit issues, which was modeled after GAO, as well as the efforts made to make the National Audit Office better known to the public. The meeting was effective in sharing the experience of both parties in audit practice and increasing the opportunities for further exchanges in the future.
